Upcoming Event Details
Trunk or Treat at the Giant Pumpkin Carve
Date: Saturday, October 15, 2011
Shifts:
Decorating:
10:30 am to 12:30 pm
Trunk or Treating:
Shift #1: 5:15 pm to 6:45 pm
Shift #2: 6:45 pm to 8:15 pm
Shift #3: 8:15 pm to 9:30 pm
Location: Salem County Fairgrounds, Route 40, Pilesgrove
At the September meeting, many of you expressed an interest in participating in this year's Trunk or Treat event at the Giant Pumpkin Carve. Here's how you can help!
DECORATE. Volunteers are needed to help decorate our trunk from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. We will be creating a blood drive theme. Feel free to email us ideas or bring decorations with you! All of the trunks will be judged for awards, so we want to get as creative as possible!
DRESS UP AND HAND OUT CANDY. Volunteers are needed to fill three different shifts later that night. Dress up as "Dracula" and tell people "You want their blood" (this is a "pretend" blood drive, after all!), you could also dress up as Salem County's largest blood donor, or maybe you'll want to be a "Volunteer" and wear a Red Cross vest and hat! Costumes will be provided. Either way, you'll help hand out candy to "Trick or Treaters" who stop by our trunk. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a bag of candy with them! The more candy we hand out, the more fun we'll have!
All Junior Red Crossers should be picked up and dropped off from the Red Cross vehicle in the Trunk or Treat area. While you are volunteering at this event, you will not be permitted to leave the area where our car is located UNLESS YOU ARE WITH AN ADULT. When your shift is over, you will not be allowed to leave until a parent or guardian informs a PAL that they are picking you up.
Parents: Please do not drop your child off at the fairgrounds. This is a large, well-attended event, and your child could easily become lost.
If you would like to volunteer for this event, please email youth@arc-salem.org.
This is a family friendly event, benefitting Salem County Meals on Wheels. Please visit: www.giantpumpkincarve.com for more information on the Giant Pumpkin Carve.

Adopt-a-Soldier for the Holidays
Last year, Junior Red Crossers donated so many items that we were able to "adopt" five military members who were serving in Iraq. We sent some very LARGE packages and received very happy notes of thanks. Since last year was such a success, we thought we'd do it again this year!
Between now and the November meeting (11/7/2011), please collect personal care, food items, and miscellaneous items for the care packages. You will receive volunteer hours for the time you spend collecting and assembling the items. Click here for a list of suggested items.
BRING THE ITEMS WITH YOU TO THE NOVEMBER MEETING!
We will assemble the care packages at that time!
If you have any questions about this project, email youth@arc-salem.org.
Any Hero Cards for Our Soldiers
Our summer interns did a great job with this project, now it's your turn! Create handmade cards for our troops! Make the cards by yourself, as a family project, with a group of your friends, or as a group project at school. Please read below for more details.
* Submit your cards at the NOVEMBER MEETING (on Monday, November 7th).
* Cards must be 4-1/4" wide x 5-1/2" high when folded. (This is one half of 8-1/2" x 11" cardstock cut in half, and then each piece is folded in half.)
* Creatively decorate and/or write on the front of the card. An appropriate thing to say on the front of the card might be "Thank You" or "Thinking of You".
* Write a personal note inside. Start your note with "For a Hero" or "To an American Hero."
* Include your heartfelt sentiments, such as thanking them, letting them know you're thinking of them, whatever you feel will let them know we care! You can also share aspects of your life with them: family, community, hobbies, your pet's latest antic! Write about anything that will make them feel happy and remembered.
* Sign your cards with your first name.
DO NOT ... use any glitter or include additional personal information (your home address, email address, etc.).
